Katherine Jackson, the mother of the pop legend Michael Jackson, is seeking over $561,000 from her son’s estate to cover legal expenses incurred during a dispute with the estate’s executors, entertainment lawyers John Branca and John McCain, over a business deal.
The legal twist follows a review of legal documents filed on December 28, 2023 and arises from a confidential agreement aimed at enhancing the estate’s value.
Michael Jackson, who died in 2009 at the age of 50, left an estate now valued at over $2 billion. His children — Prince, Paris, and Blanket — are the primary beneficiaries. Additionally, he established the Katherine Jackson Trust to provide for his mother’s lifelong needs.
The estate is managed by executors John Branca and John McClain, who have reportedly faced challenges with the Jackson family over financial matters, including allegations of profiting from the estate through various deals.
Katherine Jackson, aged 93, has challenged a specific deal proposed by Branca and McClain in 2023, which they claimed would be highly profitable.
The executors have a history of executing successful projects, such as the release of Michael Jackson’s concert film “This Is It,” which Katherine initially opposed but turned out to be a commercial triumph.
Following Katherine’s objection to the new deal, a judge ruled in favor of the estate, allowing the deal to proceed. Katherine responded by appealing this decision, seeking higher court intervention.
In her latest legal motion, Katherine argues that the estate should bear a portion of her legal costs, which amount to $561,548.48, covering services from April to November 2023. These costs encompass various legal activities, including family interviews, document preparation, and trial proceedings.
Katherine contends that the estate is financially capable of shouldering these expenses, given its substantial resources. Branca and McClain have not yet formally responded to her claim, but a court hearing has been scheduled for March 7, 2024, to address the issue.
This legal battle reflects the ongoing complexities surrounding Michael Jackson’s vast estate, highlighting the challenges faced by family members and executors in managing and preserving the legacy of one of the world’s most famous entertainers.
